Changes in class arrangements

Those of you who have resumed dancing will know that numbers have been quite low after the long break and, unfortunately, the club is currently operating at a loss.  The committee greatly appreciated the feedback and suggestions many of you gave us to our recent survey and we have spent a long time discussing various options.

Unfortunately, from January 2022, it will no longer be viable to run 3 classes each week, so we have come to the regrettable decision to cease the Tuesday class.

The last Tuesday class was on 14th December 2021. The first Wednesday class after Christmas will be 5th January 2022.  Our Burns’ Night Supper and Social Dance will be held on Wednesday 26th January instead of on the previous day.

The plan is that Wednesdays will be run as a graduated general class, where the emphasis is very much on enjoyment and fun for dancers of all levels.  The evening will start at the earlier time of 7.30 pm and run until 10.00 pm, with a refreshment break at 8.45 pm.

The format for the evening will be subject to variation as we discover and explore what works best, but the first half hour will be, primarily, for elementary dancers and improvers, and will probably consist of some step and formation practice and easier dances. We are very keen to encourage more experienced dancers to join the class from 7.30 in order to help those at elementary level to progress quickly.

From 8.00 pm dancing will speed up and the emphasis will be on popular dances, well-known to many of us, and specifically on enjoyment for everyone of all abilities.  From 9.00 pm, after the break, the programme will be for intermediate and advanced but not elementary dancers, although they are always welcome to stay and watch.  In general, the dances taught can be adjusted to whoever is there on a particular evening.

Steve Kelly has kindly agreed to continue teaching within this new format on most Wednesdays, with Kate Thomson taking one evening each month, which is excellent news.  We might introduce other teachers into the mix, and we shall keep you informed on progress.

We hope you will all come along and help to make this new format work well for everyone.  It will be subject to review as we see how it all pans out, so your ongoing feedback is not only welcome but essential.  Your point of contact for all comments will be Katy.

The Thursday evening formats – for advanced dancers only – are being tweaked slightly, but these classes and the team practice evening will continue on the usual days and at the usual time of 8.00 to 10.00 pm
